TRENDS: Australian textile powerhouse Warwick Fabrics recently presented their prescient 2020 Trends Forecast on a roadshow around the country, in collaboration with Dulux and Laminex.

The Warwick design team travel extensively throughout the year to gain global insights and inspiration, while also drawing from the well of their own wealth of experience.

Founded in 1966, Warwick have become one of the world’s leading fabric and textile wholesalers, with showrooms in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. They are well-known for their ability to update collections in a contemporary way and push boundaries, while still retaining their much-loved classic prints.

With an entirely new decade imminent, Warwick Design Manager Luciana Wallis has broken down their latest ideas on what colours, textures and designs will be at the forefront in 2020. Discover the four key trends from Warwick below…

REWIND

Mid-century modern was a major player in 2019, with the centenary of the legendary Bauhaus movement sparking celebrations and homage in design communities around the globe. Warwick forecasts that 1920s patterns will continue to be pervasive in textiles and design. This is an earthier take on retro palettes, with warm browns, tan, ochre, mustard and teal-tinged blues and navies leading the way.

Rewind fabrics are tactile and sumptuous, such as leather, suede, velvet, chenille, corduroy and boucle. The emphasis is on interesting textures with an Art Deco edge.

PROSPER

Maximalism has been embraced over the last few years, with designers such as former Decor + Design keynote Martyn Lawrence Bullard continuing to make a splash with a multi-layered approach.

Warwick’s ‘Prosper’ trend acknowledges the luxury and opulence of this direction, with a palette comprised of sumptuous, warm colours such as burgundy, deep reds, clay, terracotta, peach and ochre. Teal makes another appearance to add contrast.

Materials are soft, silky and luxe, including velvets, warp-knits, soft-touch chenille, silks, viscose and bamboo.

HERITAGE

This theme honours the past but unlike ‘Rewind’, it is nostalgic for traditional patterns like checks, grids and stripes, accompanied by plains.

‘Heritage’ is timeless and stylish, perfect for country Australian homes but also for city-slickers with a yen for simpler times.

Key colours include rustic reds and duck-egg blues and hues of green. Plus what traditional colour palette would be complete without navy?

Heritage materials are dryer and more textured than other trends. Think weaves with natural finishes.

SANCTUARY

The current international mood has us all looking for connection and peace. ‘Sanctuary’ is a trend which seeks to create an environment that makes us feel nurtured.

Unruffle feathers with colours in the Sanctuary palette which make us feel safe – warm, neutral and white shades with sandy tones, taupe and softer tones of blush and peach.

Natural and fresh fibres like cotton, linen, bamboo and wool are perfect to create a retreat, as are blended and recycled textiles.
